Cancer Control Centre – Afghanistan

Ali Abad Hospital was established in 1935. Located at the base of Ali Abad hill, the hospital grounds stretch toward the base of the hill and was gifted by the late Amir Amanullah Khan As part of the post war rebuilding inititiative, The ministry of Higher education, Afghanistan has partnered with international Atomic  Energy Agency (IAEA), South Africa to facilitate the people of Kabul by constructing A Cancer Control Centre and teaching hospital on the hospital grounds. Currently, the people of Kabul and greater Afghanistan are dependent on hospitals in Pakistan for cancer treatment. The Cancer Control Centre is envisioned to service the people of Afghanistan, to function as a symbol of cutting edge technology in treatment and control of cancer patients. The ministry has commissioned Shahrwand Engineering & Construction Company(SECC) and Abdullah Khan Architects(AKA) to bring this vision in reality. Ali Abad hill is a central landmark that contributes significantly to the image of Kabul. The site is sandwiched between the main hospital and the hill. AKA has taken inspiration from the prevalent terrain of the site and its surroundings. The concept was developed keeping in mind the contours of the site. This concept design report has been published for the benefit of the client.
